Years ago, it all began with a simple, but effective idea. The idea was to
provide ‘perspective drawings’ of machine automation systems to be
used as a sales tool, in order to demonstrate profitable machine benefits
for the ultimate customer. To tie it all together, it naturally required
descriptive copy to complete the sales presentation. “Over sixty million dollars in sales at 13% net pre-tax profit…” From our customer’s perspective, the profit return they enjoyed was totally immeasurable! Included in these numbers, are just a couple of many shining examples I’m happy to share… Development and sale of a drive system for what is now, one of the top garden tractor companies in the United States. Production went from the prototype design, to over 500 units per year in less than five years, and this was the first production tractor they built! You’ve seen oxygen tanker trucks rolling down the road? These trucks routinely service the oxygen needs for hospitals. Delivery is usually at night. Well, after learning how the existing system worked, I was able to design and build a new system to increase, by three fold, the power needed to unload the truck. Thus, it only took one hour instead of three! Imagine what that meant to the gas company and the hospital. This system is now the standard for the Industry. The light of day would never have shined on this business without using the secret strategy of “what” to say in the selling message...the all important “hook!”

business from a lot of different angles and recognize the missing link to

Now, here it is… How to hook an interested prospect almost every time! I can’t be anymore straight forward! This is the “gold key” to productive sales copywriting… It’s ‘what’ you say that counts, not ‘how’ you say it! (a perceived gift) Think about it: If I told you I would give you a brand new suit, with all of the trimmings: shirt, tie, cuff links etc. worth over $1000 – all for free – would it make any difference in ‘how’ I told you? (This, 'not so subtle' example is blatantly unrealistic, but does drive home this important concept). Would it matter if I sent a well written email, a fancy card in the mail, or even if I had a skywriter, on a clear day, write it out for you in white script? – I doubt it… Because ‘what’ I had to say was much more important than ‘how’ I said it. This “what” concept is effective, when your prospect receives a clear and precise understanding of “what the ‘perceived gift’ is, and why they can’t do without it?” Does it immediately reach out and grab their attention? Is it a unique statement of truth, or is it some mystical bunch of platitudes and empty slogans, like…
Have you ever been “put off” with this kind of mumbo – jumbo before? It’s been said by professionals in copywriting: this is the “Who Cares?” copy that sends good prospects scurrying for the exit! Therefore: what I’m about to say, is extremely important. If someone, while reading your ad, is inclined to say – who cares? – you’ve lost the sale. Could this be your problem? And as mentioned above, this is a common thread that runs through the usual standard, ineffective copy that attempts to sell by fancy “image” marketing copy, but never seems to answer the all important “what” question.
